Rolex watches have always been seen as a kind of status symbol, something you can buy and wear everyday that lets people know that you’re successful, you’re stylish, you’ve made it in life. It gives the wearer prestige. This may be how you view Rolex watches if you’ve never owned one or looked at one closely, but the truth is, there’s a whole lot more to them than you might think.
Reliable For Over 100 Years
There’s a rich history behind the well-known brand. Founded in 1905 by German Hans Wilsdorf, the original company – Wilsdorf & Davies – was based inLondonand was primarily concerned with importing watches. It wasn’t until three years later that the name Rolex was coined by Wilsdorf, who was now the owner of one of the most successful, upcoming watch companies inEngland. He wanted to create a clear, recognisable brand for his watches, but instead of using his own name (like so many of his Swiss contemporaries), he went for something short, catchy, and easy to pronounce. And so the Rolex was born.
Award-Winning Designs
The company has been leading the way ever since. In 1910, the Rolex gained official recognition from the ‘Bureau Officiel’ inBienne– not only was this a great honour, but it was the first time it had ever been given to a wristwatch. This award was the first of many for the company, and in 1914, the first ‘Kew A Chronometer Certificate’ was awarded to the watch after thorough testing at London’s Kew Observatory – testing that lasted for 45 days and included putting the watch through its paces at room temperature, in a refrigerator, and even inside an oven. Perhaps you’re starting to see just how strong and durable these watches are. Ever since this first certificate, Wilsdorf insisted that all his watches must pass the same tests before they were allowed to go on sale.
Rolex have been the forerunners in many areas of the industry. For example, in 1931, Wilsdorf invented the first self-winding watch that was powered by the perpetual movement of the arm of the wearer. He also produced the first 100 % water resistant watch, and invented a mechanism that stopped the problem of over winding.
Rolex Means Quality
One word that describes a Rolex over all others is: quality. These watches last a long time – years and years can go by without any problems, with the watch keeping time perfectly, just the same as on the day you bought it. Buying a Rolex isn’t just a way of keeping track of the time, it’s an investment for your future; how many watches do you usually buy each year? One? More? Do they keep breaking or smashing or simply wear out? This won’t happen with a Rolex. In fact, they usually last for so long that people hand them down to their children as family heirlooms. ‘Quality’ can mean many different things: precision, functionality, reliability and durability, and Rolex watches encompass all of these things.
Works Of Art
Some people look past the mechanics of a watch such as a Rolex and see real beauty in their design – some enthusiasts even see them as works of art. Take the Rolex Yachtmaster 16628, for example: with an 18k gold oyster bracelet and a yellow 18k gold face with white dial, this watch is simply stunning.
The Rolex Daytona 116523 is another watch which has a design to be admired: with a black dial and black sub dials, this watch is 18k yellow gold and comes with a stainless steel case and bracelet, employs jewel chronometer automatic movement, and is water resistant up to 100 feet (30 metres).
If, however, you want something a bit simpler, the Rolex Explorer 114270could be the watch for you. With automatic chronometer movement, it has a black dial with applied luminous numeral and index markers, a polished steel bezel, and a steel oyster lock bracelet.
There are many other models of Rolex wristwatches to choose from, including ones designed specifically for women, and watches that are 100 % water resistant. Not only are Rolex watches stylish and durable, but they never go out of fashion. They’re simply timeless.

A few months ago in June 2016, I ordered two pilot watches from Parnis (www.parniswatch.net). Unfortunately, one of them, the Jumbo Pilot was not working (please refer to this link on the review of the other Parnis pilot watch; Parnis Black Dial Big Pilot Power Reserve Chronometer). After sending the watch back to Parnis, I received a new example which was working (more about the problems later).
