Waltham’s Watch Relaunch Reminds American Greatness

Three years ago he discovered Waltham Watch Company. During its glory years which ran from 1850 to the early 1960s, the Massachusetts firm produced over 40 million watches, clocks and speedometers. Henry Ford came to study the company when he was trying to learn about assembly line production for the Model T, and he long kept a Waltham grandfather clock in his office. The companies clocks and watches were used by the likes of Charles Lindberg on his flight from New York to Paris as well as the first explorations to the North and South Poles. Train conductors in over 50 countries used Waltham pocket watches to keep time and its clocks were in various military fighter planes as well, including by the U.S. military during World War II.
During the economic boom in Japan of the 1980s, the company was bought by a Japanese collector with plans to turn it into a luxury brand. He cut all sales outside of Japan (although manufacturing continued in Switzerland, where it had moved from Massachusetts mid-last century.). In 2011 Dibenedetto acquired Waltham.

The new Waltham SOLO TEMPO and GMT are the modern expressions of fearless past endeavors, carried out by men who with a Waltham made world history through some of the greatest and most heroic achievements of the past 160 years.”



The wristwatches feature multi layered Titanium G5 cases with ceramic bezels, and other features that are representative of Waltham style, such as the dodecagonal case, a second counter at 12 o’clock in the XA and the GMT with a central date indicator and rapid time zone selector. The watches are 47 mm at the base but titanium gives the pieces both a high-tech feel and light touch. Here is a Vostok 2612.1 (Signal) with the 1MWF Poljot 2612 movement, still in its box here.
Bought new as recently as 2012 or 2013 from the factory website. Now (and for ever) out of stock.


The styling is very questionable, however I have no major complaints about it, except the Vostok screw-on crown assemblies which are too feebly on this watch.





However, the main attraction of this watch is its mechanical alarm movement.

Mechanical alarm movements are rare these days especially when encased in affordable watches.
More to the point, none are practically left, there was the ST2800 from China but it was made for a very short time and is no longer in production, I think.

This particular model conforms to the original specification of pilot watches under the German 'B-Uhr' Watch (or Observation watch) standard FL23883 of the WW2 era which calls for a watch that is 55 mm wide (excluding crown; with crown it would go to 60 mm) with a large crown. Under the A-dial format, it should also have a black dial with white Arabic numerals (all numerical markers filled with luminous material) and flame-blued sword hands also covered in luminous material. The designs also featured a unique triangle mark at the 12 o’clock position designed for ease of orientation in any condition. The movement must be capable of stopping the central seconds hand by pulling the crown. The watch should also come with a very long double-riveted leather strap.

Trotzdem habe ich gemerkt, dass sich mein Geschmack im Stil von Taschenuhren verändert hat. Statt der grell vergoldeten Variante mit verzierten Prägebildern auf den Metalloberflächen, gehe ich jetzt mehr auf klare Linien und Schlichtheit ein. Ich bin auch in Qualität und Abstammung, die schwer zu bekommen ist, wenn es um Taschenuhren kommt.
